COLORADO SPRINGS – As fall gets underway homeowners in Colorado Springs are being asked not to blow leaves and clippings into the streets.

City leaders say the trash ends up in the storm water system and takes crews away from other jobs that need to be done. It is also a violation of city code, but instead of fines, the city wants everyone to know they have other options.

“If you just mulch it up and let it exist. it’s a natural fertilizer. It will help your lawn grow, help your lawn winterize over the winter, and that’s the best way to do it. If not, please bag it up and set it to your trash service,” said water quality manager Jeff Besse.

He also said decomposing leaves can contaminate drinking water by promoting the growth of harmful algae.
