DENVER — Denver police shot an armed man after he allegedly opened fire a few blocks south of the Colorado State Capitol on Monday morning.

Around 7:10 a.m., community members called 911 to report that a person had fired multiple shots between the intersection of 8th Avenue and Lincoln Street and the intersection of 10th Avenue and Lincoln Street, said Denver Police Chief Paul Pazen.

He said police responded to the scene quickly and "resolved the situation." The suspect died. Police confirmed he had been armed with a handgun.

No officers were injured, police said. Pazen thanked the community members who called 911.

“Any time you have an individual that is armed that is firing a weapon here in the city during rush-hour traffic, it’s a very dangerous situation," he said.

The entire situation was resolved in less than five minutes, he said. Only one suspect was involved.

He said the police department plans to hold a press briefing with more information in the next 24 to 48 hours.

As they continue to investigate this shooting, the police department asks that anybody with information or video of the incident to email

There was a large police presence in the area, so police asked the community to avoid the area.
