Washington state deputy killed in shootout

ELLENSBURG, WASHINGTON – A sheriff’s deputy was killed and a police officer was injured during an exchange of gunfire in an attempted traffic stop that turned deadly near the central Washington city of Ellensburg.

The suspect died at the hospital according to Ellensburg Police Captain Dan Hansberry.

The Sherrif’s Office said in a statement that deputies tried to stop a vehicle Tuesday night that was related to a driving complaint.

The suspect fled, and police pursued.

The vehicle came to a stop and the suspect got out and fired shots at police, killing the deputy on scene.

The officer who was wounded was airlifted to a Seattle hospital. Officials have not released the names of the officers or the suspect.
