(NBC News) A moment of silence Thursday marked the anniversary of the massacre that changed the community of Parkland, Florida forever.
Survivors, friends and family members gathered to remember the 14 students and three educators killed when a gunman opened fire inside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
The moment of silence was mirrored statewide, with hundreds of thousands taking part.
Several of the students who survived have become leading voices in the fight for gun control. They have chosen to spend the day out of the spotlight to honor and pay tribute to those who were lost that day.
