(WOAI/NBC News) The week-long search for a missing San Antonio, Texas baby has come to a grim end.

Investigators say the exhaustive search for King Jay Davila is over after the baby’s body was found wrapped in a blanket and placed inside a backpack. Officers said they were led to the remains by King Jay’s father, Chistopher Davila, who claimed the child died accidentally when he fell off a bed.

During a Friday morning press conference, San Antonio Police Department Chief William McManus said the child’s cause of death remained under investigation. Davila remained charged with injury to a child by omission, although the charges could be upgraded depending on the outcome of the autopsy.

According to the report, Christopher Davila said he buried the child in a backpack, under a bridge at the end of a dead-end street in his neighborhood.

Chief McManus said his officers worked tirelessly to find King Jay and uncover the truth about how he died after becoming suspicious with Davila’s original story that King Jay was kidnapped.

Police would eventually accuse Davila, his mother, Beatrice Sampayo, and his cousin, Angie Torres, of staging the kidnapping to cover up the child’s death.
