DAVIS, CA – Investigators say a rookie police officer from Northern California was ambushed when she was fatally shot in the line of duty.

Police say the shooter rode up to the scene of a three-car crash scene on a bicycle and fired multiple rounds, hitting 22-year-old Natalie Corona in the neck and firing more shots as she lay on the ground.

Police still don’t know the motive and may never find out, because the suspect went back to his apartment and committed suicide after a standoff with police.

Corona’s father, a retired deputy, said his daughter had a caring heart, and died doing what she loved to do.

Police say Corona was a beloved officer and the small department is devastated.

A candlelight vigil for Corona is planned for Saturday night.
