MONUMENT – On Saturday, the Monument Police Department responded to the King Soopers at 1070 W. Baptist Rd on a menacing call.

When officers arrived, they learned that while a man and woman were attempting to leave the grocery store they saw a man, later identified as 51-year-old Steven Weaver, standing in the parking lot. After loading their groceries, the man went to put the cart up and the woman got into the car.

After the woman got in the car, Weaver approached and tried to enter the vehicle but the woman locked the doors. The male then returned to the car where Weaver brandished a knife and demanded he be given a ride. A fight ensued and Weaver tried to stab the man several times. The man tried to get in the vehicle, but Weaver pulled him away.

Weaver then entered the vehicle but was pulled out by the man and then fled the area on foot.

Monument PD said their officers were able to locate Weaver in the area and he was arrested. After the arrest, it was discovered that Weaver is a sex offender but had not registered in the state of Colorado.

Weaver was booked into the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center and will be charged with attempted first-degree kidnapping, attempted aggravated robbery, menacing, first-degree criminal trespass, failure to register as a sex offender, and harassment.

Monument PD said neither Weaver nor the victims were injured during the incident.
