PALMER LAKE – Family and friends of Tim Watkins gathered Saturday in Palmer Lake to honor the memory of the late cyclist.

A memorial structure was unveiled to honor Watkins, who was killed on Mount Herman last year.

Who killed Watkins is still a mystery, but family and friends said they are finding some comfort in the commemorative sculpture.

The sculpture depicts a replica of the bike he rode, as well as a hawk perched on the top to symbolize his respect of trails and nature.

“The way that he respected the trails and the way he rode the trails, this is just more respect for him and how he did all the things around her like creating maps and just creating better trails for people to ride,” said Watkins’ brother David.

The rock serving as the base of the structure actually came from a nearby trailhead Watkins frequented. Saturday would have been his 62nd birthday.
