WASHINGTON – The Trump Administration announced its support for a proposal that would require pharmaceutical companies to include prices in television ads.

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar announced his support for the proposal Monday.

“Patients deserve to know what a given drug could cost when they’re being told about the benefits and risks it may have,” Azar said. ” They deserve to know if the drug company has pushed their prices to abusive levels, and they deserve to know this every single time they see a drug advertised to them on TV.”

Azar’s announcement came hours after a lobby representing drug companies said companies will start “indirectly” mentioning drug prices in their ads. But the Trump administration’s proposal would require the price to be disclosed in the ads.

If adopted, the new rule would affect any drug covered by Medicare or Medicaid.
