KIT CARSON – A driver died of injuries in a single-car crash on Highway 59, north of Kit Carson Sunday.

Colorado State Patrol is investigating the crash that happened at milepost 5, approximately five miles north of Kit Carson. CSP said a 2004 Mercury SUV was traveling northbound when the driver crossed the center of the highway and into the southbound lane of traffic.

The driver then overcorrected to the right, causing the SUV to travel across the southbound and northbound lanes. CSP said the vehicle then traveled off the right side of the road before rolling over 2 plus times.

The driver, 86-year-old Carol Kohart of Seibert, was transported to Keefe Memorial Hospital for serious bodily injury. She later succumbed to her injuries and died at the hospital, according to CSP.

She was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Drugs, alcohol, and speed are not being considered factors in the crash.
