ASPEN, Colo. (AP) – Officials say a contractor at the Aspen airport spilled more than 1,300 gallons (4,920 liters) of jet fuel last week.

The Aspen Times reports Atlantic Aviation General Manager Jonathan Jones says the fuel was contained and did not reach any water sources.

Jones says an employee failed to follow protocols Friday and did not check a fuel tank at the fixed base operation area before he began filling.

A spokesman for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment confirmed Monday the spill was reported.

Pitkin County authorities and the Aspen fire chief say the spill was not reported to their agencies.

Fil Meraz, the airport’s director of operations, says the spill occurred in a containment area designed to handle such events, and the area will be cleaned.
