Colorado Springs – The drive on I-25 in both directions between Monument and Castle Rock is already a challenge and for a while, it’s going to get even worse before it gets better.

CDOT says construction is expected to begin next month on the northern section of the project. Most of the 18-mile long stretch known as “The Gap,” will experience active construction by the summer of 2019. Completion of the highway expansion is expected by 2022.

The construction includes a controversial express lane in each direction. The shoulders along the roadway will be widened and crews are replacing or repairing bridges along the stretch.

Delays along I-25 during the work are inevitable in both directions. There are two alternate routes to take, but volume will increase on Highway 83 and Highway 105 as more people try to avoid I-25.

Basically, there may be no easy and quick way to get between the Springs and Castle Rock for quite some time, so start planning extra drive times in for your commute when the work begins.
