On Thursday, the Colorado Springs Police Department Fugitive unit was looking for a suspect who was wanted for domestic violence related stalking charges.

CSPD said the Fugitive Unit located the suspect in the 3900 block of E. Bijou St. around 10:45 a.m.

According to Police, the suspect was with an adult female acquaintance and her three-year-old child when he was located. When officers contacted the suspect, he used the child and mother to physically shield himself from officers and forcefully made his way back into the residence where he had been hiding.

Members of the CSPD Tactical Enforcement Unit responded to the scene and established open air communication with the suspect.

CSPD said the suspect failed to comply with lawful orders to surrender and refused to release the female acquaintance. When the suspect attempted to escape the established perimeter, the Tactical Enforcement Unit utilized a “distraction device,” a taser deployment, and a K-9 to bring the suspect into custody.

The suspect was identified as 34-year-old Lawrence Johnson. CSPD said he was arrested for the domestic violence staling warrant, two unrelated warrants, and two counts of kidnapping for his actions against the female acquaintance and her child.

The female acquaintance and her child were not injured during the incident.

Lawrence Johnson was arrested by CSPD after a standoff in which he used a female acquaintance and her child as a human shield.
