Colorado gubernatorial candidate U.S. Rep. Jared Polis has named former state lawmaker Dianne Primavera as his running mate.
Polis announced his selection Monday in an interview with The Associated Press.
Primavera, 68, is a former state representative from suburban Denver who voted to expand Medicaid in Colorado.
A four-time survivor of cancer, Primavera has served since 2017 as the CEO of Susan G. Komen Colorado, a non-profit foundation that funds cancer treatment and research.
The pick signals that Polis, a Democrat, plans to make health care a top issue in the November election against state Treasurer Walker Stapleton, the Republican nominee.
Polis has endorsed a universal single-payer health care system. He proposes working with other Western states to create a Medicare-for-all system in the region.
