President Trump is reportedly considering blocking luxury German carmakers in the U.S. market, according to a report from German magazine WirtschaftsWoche.

That report cites unnamed U.S. and European diplomats who say President Trump told French President Emmanuel Macron said he will steer trade policy to try to stop Mercedes Benz models from driving in the U.S.

The news comes after theWhite House confirmed in a statement that Trump asked Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross to consider whether imported cars and auto parts pose a threat to national security.

A source told the Associated Press that the president suggested seeking new tariffs of 20 to 25 percent on automobile imports.

Nearly half of all vehicles in the U.S. are imported.
