John Elway was out at the Broadmoor Golf Club on Sunday gearing up for a chance to compete in the US Senior Open this summer.

The Broncos Hall of Fame quarterback and current General Manager will hit the links Monday hoping to secure a spot, but it won’t be easy. With 84 competitors all vying for two spots, Elway will have to play a near flawless round to compete in the historic tournament.

Caddying for him will be his long time friend and former Broadmoor caddie, George Solich who says John stands just as good a chance as anyone to claim one of those final spots.

"Well there’s 84 qualifiers for two spots, there’s a lot of good players in this qualifier. John can go low, he’s got a really solid game but it’s about whether you can putt and hit fairways, I think that will be the key," said Solich.

Whether he does remains to be seen, but one thing is certain, a huge crowd will be in attendance and you better believe Elway being there is a big reason why.

"Honestly I was expecting a couple hundred and now we’re up to 2300! Sometimes you get what you ask for, but we’re ready, we have parking plans. Public parks offsite, players park onsite, so we’re ready for it," said Broadmoor Director of Golf, Russ Miller.

It should be a terrific day of golf as we gear up for the tournament June 25th through July 1st. Stay with News-5 Sports as we track the tournament from start to finish both online and on air.
