(NBC News) An Indiana middle school student is in custody after opening fire in a classroom Friday, wounding his teacher and another student.

Police say the boy asked to be excused from his class in Noblesville Middle School, then returned with two handguns and began shooting.

Witnesses say the teacher was shot three times as he tackled the student gunman.

"Our principal came over the intercom and said ‘This is not a drill and there is an active shooter in the 7th grade hallway,’" said 8th grader Sophia Foster.

Frightened students immediately took cover in their classrooms.

The shooting comes exactly one week to the day after ten people were killed and ten others wounded in a Santa Fe, Texas high school.

It also marks the 21st school shooting in 2018 where someone was either injured or killed on campus.
