A bill making its way through the state legislature could impact thousands of southern Coloradans.

According to PERA, as of January 2018, there are 27,695 active PERA participants in El Paso County and 9,675 in Pueblo County.

Current retirees in El Paso County 12,204 are receiving benefits and in Pueblo County that number is 6,284.

PERA also calculates a 3rd classification of employees ‘inactive’, which are employees that used to work for public employers.

In El Paso County there are 21,295 and in Pueblo, 8,134.

The current PERA bill is an amended version of the original one presented by Senate Republicans earlier this session.

Some of the amendments include the removal of a contribution increase for employees, as well as a change in how the benefits are calculated by average salary.
