The Canon City Police Department wants to make sure all their officers are protected on the job, with a little help from the community.

At an event Saturday, people were able to make donations and participate in a number of fundraisers working towards providing all local officers with protective vests from ‘Shield 616.’

The event was held at the Safeway store in Canon City, as the Safeway Foundation developed a campaign to raise funds in helping equip local law enforcement with body armor. Police say having this type of gear even in a community the size of Canon City is extremely important.

"We don’t have right now the protection to sufficiently address those issues, usually that’s left for our SWAT in the past," said Jeff Canada of the Canon City Police Department.

Shield 616 is a non-profit organization that works to provide every officer with the necessary "advanced active shooter/crowd control gear."

The campaign is underway until May 9, people can continue to make donations at Safeway or online at the Safeway Foundation website
