Smith Canyon Fire in Otero County is now 95 percent contained

OTERO COUNTY — Authorities are reporting that the Smith Canyon Fire is now about 95% contained. The Otero County Sheriff tweeted fire crews are pulling out as the thunderstorms roll in. They will monitor the fire overnight and hope that it will be 100 percent contained by Tuesday morning.

The fire started Saturday night and was sparked by lightning. It is burning about 20 minutes south of La Junta, south of Higbee. Otero County Sheriff Shawn Mobley reported that the fire had burned approximately 100 acres as of Sunday morning.

Mobley tweeted that additional local and state crews are responding to the fire area Monday.
