Cape-wearing superheroes are always popular Halloween costumes. But, if there is anything 2020 has taught us, it’s that heroes come in all shapes and sizes and many don’t wear capes.

This year, one less-recognized but important hero, the garbage collector, is being celebrated with a special costume from Hefty. To honor sanitation workers for their frontline service during the pandemic, the Hefty Garbage Collector Halloween costume gives little ones the chance to dress up as their favorite real-life hero.

Hefty

The Hefty Garbage Collector Halloween costume comes with a reflective vest and overalls, hat, gloves and Hefty mobile trash can — plus a box of Hefty Ultra Strong trash bags for parents, to help with Halloween cleanup. The limited-edition costume fits most 2- to 4-year-olds and costs just $5.49 (the same price as a box of garbage bags) on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you’d like one for your child, check Hefty’s website daily at noon CT (1 p.m. ET) for your chance. You’ll want to be quick, as Hefty does not say how many they have or how quickly they expect them to sell out.

“At Hefty, we know that garbage collectors are real-life superheroes who prove their strength and dedication every day, and our kids recognize that too when they wait at the window for them to go by each week,” Nicole Buddin, senior brand manager at Reynolds Consumer Products, said in a press release. “Since our trash bags offer top-notch quality and strength for an affordable price, we are bringing that same value to Halloween, giving kids the chance to dress up as their unsung garbage collector heroes for a price parents will love.”

It’s true that some children do indeed have a fascination with garbage collectors, like this 3-year-old girl from Bloomington, Illinois, who gave her local garbage collector one of her birthday cupcakes. (He, in turn, gave her some “Frozen” toys for her birthday.) If your child is one of them, you might now be set for whatever Halloween events you have planned.

If you can’t get your hands on the Hefty costume, Spirit Halloween has a toddler Garbage Truck Ride-Along Costume for $34.99.

Do you have a child who would like to honor a local garbage collector by wearing this costume? Good luck!
