COLORADO SPRINGS – One of the most stressful times a family can experience is figuring out how to care for an aging parent when the time comes they can no longer safely care for themselves 24 hours a day.

Ken Jenson owns Amada Senior Care in Colorado Springs, and it’s a situation he has been through himself.  “My own mom and dad, my dad had a stroke about 10 years ago, and my mom had a T.I.A. (a small stroke) about 2 years ago.  All of a sudden all the kids said, ‘What are we going to do, how are we going to deal with this? We thought mom was going to live forever and take care of dad.’  We realized that wasn’t going to happen.”

Ken says there are many companies in our area that can help people who find themselves in this all too familiar situation.  “Most people and most families don’t understand is that when one or the other spouse is sick, or needs help the other spouse goes on call 24 hours a day, all day  long, all night long, they are worried about their spouse. If they go to the grocery store they may only go for 20 minutes because they’re worried, ‘What is he going to do, what is she going to do while I’m gone?’”

Chances are as all of us age, sooner or later we will have to face a common reality that we can’t do it all on our own.

Ken explains that’s when exploring senior care is appropriate.  “The problem is everyone feels like, they are exactly the same as they were 10 years ago, and they are not.  We (at Amada) can help people do simple things to help them stay in their house and stay safe. Dressing, bathing, transferring, toileting, cooking, cleaning, laundry, those are all things that we do to help people stay in their homes.”

There can be many challenges of paying for senior care.  It’s a topic that any good company should be sensitive to and advise you about.

At Amada Ken says, finding his clients ways they may not know about to pay for the care is where his company excels.  “The number one thing is we do is try to help families find a source of income to cover our services.  Whether it’s long term care insurance, or it’s the V.A. aid and attendance program we help with that. That’s a big deal, because if we can find them the money to pay for our services it’s a grand slam for everybody.”

When insurance isn’t available, self pay is also an option.
