5 Things You Need to Know about Senior Home Care

No one wants to leave the comfort of their own home, especially as they grow older.

In fact, a study by AARP found that 87 percent of people age 65 and over want to stay at home for as long as possible. Before you get too cozy, though, familiarize yourself with these 5 key home care basics:

1. Determine if home care is the best option for your family

When it’s time to consider options for the care of your loved ones, there’s a lot to take into account.

Amada Senior Care, Colorado Springs, owner Ken Jenson suggests looking at care as a whole. How much help does the senior need? How safe and manageable is their current living situation? What will things cost?

If someone needs care 24/7, staying at home may not be the best choice. But if the senior just needs help with activities such as light housekeeping or assistance with transportation, caregivers can come in for a few hours a day each week, allowing seniors to remain in the comfort of their home.

2. Hiring “someone” isn’t the same as hiring a caregiver

One of the biggest misconceptions about caregiving, Jenson says, is that people think they can hire the college student down the street. But hiring just anyone often doesn’t cut it.

First, many long-term care insurance policies won’t cover in-home assistance administered by a private person; only care provided by an outside service is covered. Second, it’s only when going through an agency that you are protected against things like unemployment and liability claims.

3. Using a professional means finding someone you can trust

One of the best ways to ensure you choose a caregiver you can trust is by using an agency. All of Amada’s 200 caregivers, for example, are licensed, insured and given rigorous background checks.

4. Medicare will not cover your expenses

It may come as a surprise to many that Medicare doesn’t actually cover many at-home care costs.

“I once asked a group of people if they thought auto insurance would cover home care,” says Jenson. “Of course no one raises their hand. Then I asked if they thought Medicare would cover home care. Most everyone raised their hand.”

While Medicare covers things like skilled nursing care or physical therapy, it won’t pay for round-the-clock care at home, personal care or homemaking.

5. Long-term care insurance fills the gap

The cost of home care isn’t just a drop in the bucket. Genworth Financial’s 2016 Cost of Care Survey found that the annual cost of homemaker services surpassed $50,000. So if Medicare doesn’t cover care, how can anyone afford it?

Long-term care insurance covers home care and for those currently without it, most seniors can still purchase coverage until they’re 80. For a couple of a hundred dollars a month, some seniors can buy enough coverage for several years of home care.

Seniors may also be eligible for monetary aid through the Veterans Affairs if they served in the military. Local or federal vouchers may be found through the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging.

The team at Amada Senior Care in Colorado Springs wants to help seniors thrive and live independently, in their own homes. Professional caregivers are thoroughly screened, ensuring only the best care for your loved one.

Whether you’re looking for professional in-home care, advising on senior care options or help with financial questions, Amada Senior Care can help you make the best choices for your loved one.
