COLORADO SPRINGS – In this Your Healthy Family we are highlighting a charitable effort from a group of surgeons and other medical professionals in Colorado Springs who are looking to serve a specific group of people in need in our area.

To know if you qualify for free hand surgery day, ask yourself these 3 questions:

  1. Do you have insurance of any kind?
  2. Are you eligible for Medicaid or Medicare?
  3. Are you in need of hand surgery?

If you answered yes to the first 2 questions you do NOT qualify for the free hand surgery day. As an example, someone who qualifies may make too much money to have government supported insurance, but not enough money to purchase their own insurance out of pocket, and it’s not provided by their employer.

Dr. Jeffry Watson is a board-certified hand surgeon with the Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group (CSOG), and a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.  While many surgeons and medical professionals go on medical missions to foreign countries, Dr. Watson wanted the chance to serve people in southern Colorado who are in need.

Dr. Watson explains, “The truth is that our own backyard is an underserved area.  The American Society for Surgery of the Hand recognizes this. This (free hand surgery day) has been done in a number of other cities like Atlanta, Nashville, San Francisco and we would like to do the same thing here in Colorado Springs.”

The types of surgeries that will be performed are:

Carpal Tunnel

Cubital Tunnel

Ganglion Cyst

Trigger Finger

Dupuytren’s Disease

Other Hand Surgeries

Dr. Watson explains if you experience numbness in your fingers, trouble extending your fingers from a fist, or the inability to fully open your fingers, you may be in need of hand surgery.  He can also treat individuals with an unexplained mass or lump in the hand.

Another sign that you might need hand surgery, says Dr. Watson, is if you have unexplained aches or pains or swelling. “Some people may have fractures that never healed if they fell and hurt their wrists or hands years ago and never had it looked at. Now it keeps swelling every time they try to grip and pull and push because they have a broken bone and don’t know it. That is not going to heal until it’s addressed surgically.”

On this special day, hand surgery is offered for free, and if you qualify, it may be just the helping hand you need! Dr. Watson, Dr. Cassidy, and their group of volunteers in Colorado Springs are excited to provide this service for you on Saturday October 6th, 2018.

Dr. Watson says the support he has received from the groups who can make this happen has been overwhelming.  “We all feel good when we extend charitable efforts especially for things that we know how to do. We want to help the people that live in our backyard but often times it’s very difficult for us as surgeons to find ways to treat them.  Even if we (as surgeons) may be willing to provide our time and services it’s hard to find a venue, and all the needed support staff to also provide their time and services, and now we have everything coming together.”

In the coming days, we’ll hear from UCHealth Memorial Central Hospital, and the staff at the Orthopaedic and Spine Surgery Center of Southern Colorado who are also helping make this day of free hand surgery possible.

If you think you qualify call Joshua Heermans with CSOG at 719-622-4546 for more information and screening details.
