COLORADO SPRINGS – April is National Donate Life Month, which is aimed at raising awareness about the importance of being an organ donor and to encourage everyone to sign up to be an organ, eye and tissue donor.

This morning at UCHealth Memorial Hospital Central in Colorado Springs, and at other hospitals across Colorado, a Donate Life flag was raised that will fly all month. At Memorial Central, blue and green lights also will shine at night throughout April.

Andrea Smith is the director of public relations for Donor Alliance who says,  “The gift of life is really an amazing thing. Of course, you think about the life-saving gift a transplant is for recipients and their families.”

So what can you do right now?  Andrea says, “There are a few simple things you can do to show your support for organ, eye and tissue donation.  First, say yes and sign up at the driver’s license office. If you don’t need to go back and renew your driver’s license or ID right now, go online to donateifeColorado.org anytime and you can signup, or update your registration anytime.”

Whether you have checked the donor box on your driver’s license or not, one of the most important things you can do right now is let your loved ones know about your desire to be an organ donor, says Andrea.  “Discuss donation with your family; let your loved ones know your decision. It will make things easier for them at a very difficult time and it’s one less decision that they have to make, so be sure and discuss donation with your family.”

Not only will donating organs give others a second chance at life, it can bring some peace to the loved ones of those who donate.  Andrea says, “I never really thought about the donor side, until our volunteers really told me about the healing power of donation for donor families.  It really does bring those families just a very slightest sense of solace during a very difficult time to know that their loved one’s legacy is living on – that they are willing to continue giving to others, even after their death.”

Linda Regis, a double lung transplant recipient was on hand to help raise the Donate Life flag at UCHealth Memorial today, and will share her transplant story in your next Your Healthy Family story. All during April, we will be sharing inspiring transplant stories highlighting the powerful life-changing gift of organ donation.
