COLORADO SPRINGS – February is Heart Month, and to mark the importance of heart health, the staff at the UCHealth Memorial Heart Clinic is offering free heart screenings. Yes – free! It’s a perfect chance to find out your level of risk for heart disease.
Bradden Cannon is the Senior Director of the Cardiovascular Service Line at UCHealth Memorial and says: “If you have any questions about your heart health or if you are worried about anything, like ‘my grandfather had a heart attack at 42’, it may be this is the opportunity for you to come in and get screened, and it won’t cost anything, but it can give peace of mind.”
If you’re wondering why would a large health care system offer these tests for free, Bradden explains, “it gives us the opportunity to serve the community and sift through disease that might be out there that people are not paying attention to. Hopefully, we can keep them out of the emergency department with a heart attack, because we are catching it (heart disease) upstream and letting people know, ‘you do have a blockage in your carotid artery and we need to remove it’, or, ‘you have an issue with the rhythm of your heart and we need to do some additional testing’.”
The free heart screening takes about 45 minutes includes: a Limited Echo of the heart, a Carotid Stenosis screening, an EKG, AAA screening and a consultation with a cardiac nurse.
Bradden says, “if there is any follow-up that needs to be done, we will send out a letter and make sure you connect with a doctor. These are noninvasive diagnostic tests that provide us the opportunity to look at the heart, the rhythm of the heart and the electrical output of the heart. It gives us the ability to look at the heart in an easy manner, and we give the results to medical professionals so they can actually see what’s going on.”
These free heart screenings are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. There are three more dates happening: Friday February 22nd; Friday, March 1st; and Friday, March 8th. To schedule a free appointment call (719) 365-5181.
