COLORADO SPRINGS – In this story, we have a common sense warning from Colorado Springs Dentist Dr. Fred Guerra, with Guerra Dental and the American Dental Association (ADA) to avoid do-it-yourself dentistry.

Believe it or not, Dr. Guerra says he’s seen it all over the years, “We’re talking everything from braces to bleaching agents to cosmetic treatments like trying to glue on their own veneers.  We have even had people who will go out in the garage and try and take out a tooth.”

Recently the ADA launched a public awareness campaign warning people to avoid do-it-yourself dentistry.  The campaign says various DIY dental treatments can affect the gums, bones, and ligaments that support teeth, or the teeth themselves.

Dr. Guerra says, “It really started off with the bleaching.  There are also those people who will go and get a (sports) mouthguard that they boil and bite.  While it might give some temporary relief, and it’s better than nothing in terms of you really grinding your teeth, it’s not form fitting and it’s not going to relieve symptoms of TMJ or migraines or headaches.”

No matter the do-it-yourself dental fix people may try, in Dr. Guerra’s experience more often than not seeing a dentist will save you, in many departments.  “What we have found is by trying to save money or not go to a dentist, many of these people have had such adverse results that the cost and pain and suffering of having to go to a dentist to get it completed properly has not made it worth their efforts.”
