COLORADO SPRINGS – Do you suffer from migraines and haven’t been able to track down a cause? If you have been to your doctor, have you thought about checking with your dentist?
Dr. Fred Guerra, with Guerra Dental in Colorado Springs says, ”After you have seen other medical professionals, and they have gone through the work up and diagnosis they might ask, ‘have you seen your dentist recently to rule out any sinus pathology’?”
Dr. Guerra says he frequently sees patients who complain of migraines, headaches, sore muscles, sensitivity to light, and these are all problems that could be tied to something happening in your mouth. .
“A bad bite or malocclusion can contribute to migraines and help trigger it. A bad bite can be caused by crooked teeth, teeth at the improper angles that don’t articulate properly. Missing teeth can cause a bad bite, too much stress or stain on some teeth, these can all contribute to migraine in certain individuals.”
Catching issues like a bad bite, comes down to the basics that every dentist should be looking for when they see you, and not just looking for cavities and cleaning your teeth.
Dr. Guerra says, “Your dentist should be checking your bite, checking your occlusion. There are some treatments available. Sometimes it’s a simple bite adjustment, or they may recommend an oral appliance or a night guard, or a jaw repositioning device.”
If you have questions follow up with your dentist.
