COLORADO SPRINGS – There is an important community event this Saturday September 22nd, that UCHealth is taking part in, along with Penrose Hospital, Evans Army Hospital and diabetes support groups and industry partners.
The Community Diabetes Expo will be taking place at 2222 N. Nevada at the Penrose Cancer Center in Colorado Springs from 9 a.m. to noon. It’s for anyone who has diabetes or cares for someone with diabetes or simply wants to learn more about the disease.
Patricia Kulbeth is a registered dietitian with UCHealth Memorial Hospital and is one of the many diabetes educators who will be volunteering their time. Patricia explains “A group of people I see for appointments in my role here with UCHealth Memorial as a registered dietitian are patients who have just been newly diagnosed with diabetes, or people who are caring for their aging parents who have diabetes and they don’t know what to do.”
Patricia knows navigating the world of diabetes can be challenging for anyone. She hopes many people will attend this Saturday’s Expo to listen to doctors who have been invited to speak and ask questions of experts and take part in free screenings that will be offered.
“Our whole point is to make sure we are supporting people with diabetes, their families, their caregivers, and also connecting them with community resources and accurate information because there is a lot of inaccurate information out there.”
Patricia will be at the “Ask a Dietitian” booth. “One of the myths I hear is people say, ‘when I have diabetes I should never eat carbohydrates at all’, and that is not true. You should have carbohydrates in proper amounts to help give you energy and regulate your blood sugars.”
The Community Diabetes Expo is free, as is parking for the event. Organizers ask that you register so they will know how many people to expect. You can register, or learn more HERE or call 719-776-5536.
