COLORADO SPRINGS — Imagine being an athlete and having no idea you're good enough to compete for an Olympic gold medal.
Sounds crazy right?
Well it isn't as crazy as you may think with a new show called "the Next Olympic Hopeful" on NBC Sports.
In an effort to increase and enhance the pipeline of world-class athletes pursuing Olympic sport, the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee in partnership with Milk Life and 24 Hour Fitness has developed a talent-identification program, The Next Olympic Hopeful. The program invites elite American athletes of all sporting backgrounds across the country to apply and tryout for a chance to become a member of Team USA.
The program will first narrow the pool of applicants to 50 athletes to be invited to spend several days at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. The talent-identification program will then evaluate the finalists, putting them through intensive screening and sport-specific training. Athletes will also be taught proper sport-specific techniques from USOPC and National Governing Body high performance staff that coach U.S. Olympians and Paralympians. The OTC serves as the heart of Olympic and Paralympic sport in the United States, and features world class training facilities and access to leaders in the field of sport medicine, science and psychology.
Following the tryout, six winners will be invited to join national team camps – one for each of the participating sports (cycling, bobsled, skeleton, rowing, rugby and weightlifting). The winners will be eligible to receive financial, medical and training support as they prepare for the opportunity to compete at the Olympic Games.
Season 3 of the show will air sometime in December.
