COLORADO SPRINGS — The Harrison boys' basketball team had been in the top 10 of the 4A rankings all season long, yet the Panthers best player isn't getting the love he deserves.
That's about to change.
"When you really get to know him. It's just you and Donta, he is really active and funny and a good person to be around," explained senior forward Donta Dawson. "But on the basketball court he is a different animal? For sure, he is more exciting and active."
He is one of the best ballers in the Springs, yet not many people know the name Donta Dawson. Like most South side athletes, this Panther has been overlooked.
"We really try to show out and show we are somebody, explained Dawson. "We are greater than just thugs of Colorado. We try to show that we are more than that."
And once you meet the soft spoken junior, you'll see the Panther inside ready to roar. Dawson is the leading scorer on the top ranked Panthers basketball team. A responsibility he doesn't take lightly.
"I am helping my team winning weather it is rebounds or playing defense. Whatever it is as long as we win I am cool," said Dawson. "I figured that our team is going to go as far as I take us. So once I learned that it really hit me: I have to lead."
But what make Dawson special isn't his play on the court.
"I just want to get to a point in life where I can give back and basketball is going to lead me to that point."
And with that leadership, Dawson hopes to hoist a state trophy at the end of the year.
"There is nothing stopping us except for ourselves so as long as we get out of our way, we are going to be state champions."
