VAIL – Three-time Olympic medalist and world champion skier Lindsey Vonn announced her retirement from competitive skiing following next week’s World Championships on Instagram Friday morning.
Vonn wrote in her post, ” I crashed in Copper this November and injured my left knee, tearing my LCL plus sustaining 3 fractures. Despite extensive therapy, training and a knee brace, I am not able make the turns necessary to compete the way I know I can.”
In her post, she said her last competitive races will be next week in Åre, Sweden. She won her one gold medal in the downhill event in the Vancouver Olympics in 2010. She finished her Olympic career with a bronze medal in downhill in PyeongChang and another bronze medal in Super G in Vancouver.
Vonn was born in Minnesota, but she considers Vail to be her hometown.
