“Dentures can be painful if they don’t fit right; that’s why that idea persists. But there are a couple of things we can do to make sure they don’t hurt,” says Dr. Michael Bull of Prestige Dental Centers. He and Dr. Sterling Rogers have restored thousands of smiles at their practice, which has locations in Colorado Springs and Pueblo.
One of the most important things to do is to make sure dentures fit properly by getting a reline done at least every two years, which reshapes the underside of the dentures and makes it more comfortable against the gums. This will help patients avoid pain and potential bone damage.
Luckily, there are plenty of other ways to make dentures much more comfortable. Here are three innovations that do just that.
- Implant-Supported Dentures
Dental implants, which are built to last a lifetime, are the number one innovation when it comes to dentures. Implant dentures are anchored securely to the bone through implants and come with attachments that are easy to remove and clean.
After you’ve come in to consult with the doctors, the implant dentures can be placed in just one surgical visit, which is why they’re also known as “same-day dentures” or “one-day dentures.” Patients can always try starting with traditional dentures and then come back later for implants.
“The implant takes the pain out of dentures and holds them tight. You can chew food like normal again and eat foods you couldn’t normally eat,” Dr. Bull says. “Dental implants allow you to eat what you want to eat, not what you have to eat.”
- 3D-Printed Dentures
One of the newest high-tech innovations is digitally printed dentures, which Dr. Bull and Dr. Rogers just started implementing. This new process creates a much denser tooth that’s perfectly customized for the patient.
“You come in, get impressions done, but then they’re designed on a computer and the computer prints it out without any human error,” Dr. Rogers says.
- Ultrasonic Cleaning
The doctors also use a major innovation that helps with comfort and hygiene: an ultrasonic bath. When patients come in, they can put their dentures in this special cleaning solution to remove heavy buildup that their home cleaning solutions won’t be able to handle. A major part of keeping dentures comfortable is keeping everything sanitary.
More innovations are on the way, too. Researchers are currently working on an antibiotic surface for dentures that would prevent bacteria from growing, and further advance dental hygiene.
All of these innovations are making dentures a more reliable option and helping patients feel more comfortable and confident every day.
“Probably one of the most life-changing things people can do is changing their smile,” says Dr. Bull.
