COLORADO SPRINGS – Police said the driver suspected of hitting and killing a pedestrian in Colorado Springs Wednesday night was high at the time of the crash.

Police arrested 21-year-old Destany Cardenas for vehicular homicide shortly after police said she returned to the scene, near Colorado Avenue and Cimino Drive.

It started when a Colorado Springs police sergeant noticed a man lying in the westbound lanes of Colorado Avenue around 10:20 p.m. Wednesday. 21-year-old Mitchal Holloway was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.

While police were tending to the victim, they noticed a Hyundai sedan with two women inside return to the scene. That’s when they determined that the car might have been involved in the crash earlier, and arrested the woman driving the vehicle.

Colorado Avenue was closed for hours following the crash, but it reopened around 2 a.m.
