COLORADO SPRINGS – Improvements on South Nevada are making visible strides since 2015 as businesses of all kinds have opened or are about to.

Three out of seven projects are either complete or near completion.

“It’s been great to see this happen and see the response that we’ve gotten from the community, especially people that have driven by it everyday for years and years, watching it upgrade and become safer and a nicer place to dwell, said Ray O’Sullivan, manager at Urban Renewal Authority.

People like Debora Roberge are looking forward to more employment opportunities.

“It’s going to offer more jobs for the people and more money for the community,” she said.

With more people finding jobs, more housing options will follow.

For example, this proposed building on Saint Elmo and Cascade Avenue will offer 25 new rental units.

“The new jobs that are being created now, we can’t get the apartments open soon enough,” added O’Sullivan.

Shopping centers are also in the works.
The one on Nevada Avenue includes a Tokyo Joe’s, now open, a Smashburger drive-thru, which could be open this week and a European Wax Center set to open later this month.

Residents are enjoying the variety.

“More options, besides McDonald’s and Burger King,” said Roberge.

“This place has beaten McDonald’s and Burger King,” conferred resident Ray Whitehead.

They’re also excited for more growth in the years to come.

“I hope it spurs the area for a little revitalization,” added Whitehead.

Work on three more projects will start in the next year and all seven projects are expected to be completed by 2020.
