(KPNX) The father of a 12-year-old United States citizen is back in the U.S. after being briefly sent to Mexico.

Jose Gonzalez met his wife, Barbara, when he was 16-years-old.

They were married and had a child before Barbara enlisted in the U.S. Army.

She was deployed to Afghanistan, where she died in the line of duty in 2010.

Gonzalez, an undocumented immigrant, was allowed to stay in the country because he held a special status for military spouses.

He didn’t have a green card, but a judge closed the case because of his special status.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reopened the case and removed Gonzalez from the U.S. last week, sending him to Mexico.

Monday, Gonzalez was told he was allowed to re-enter the country.

ICE has not commented on the Gonzalez case, but says it may provide a statement sometime Tuesday.
