Coming off record year, CSPD crash investigators change name

COLORADO SPRINGS — CSPD is renaming it’s Major Accident Unit, which will now be called the Major Crash Team.

CSPD says the change is in part due to their philosophy of improving traffic safety in 2019 coming off of an incredibly dangerous and deadly 2018 on the roads.

Last year investigators say they responded to 48 fatal accidents and more than 100 other call outs.

There have already been 6 traffic-related deaths in Colorado Springs 2 months into this year, traffic deaths are also trending upward statewide, which has contributed to the CSPD unit’s name change.

The department says they have chosen the term “crash” as opposed to “accident” because accident implies that the crash is unavoidable or happens by chance, whereas the word crash places responsibility and accountability on drivers.
