TEMPE – Police in Arizona arrested a man accused of stabbing a pregnant Lyft driver and stealing her vehicle on Sunday.

Kristina Howato, 39, was dropping off 20-year-old Fabian Durazo at an apartment complex when he started stabbing her repeatedly inside her SUV. He continued to stab her as she got out of the car, and Durazo took off in the vehicle.

The victim and her unborn child were taken to the hospital where both were pronounced dead.

“This is definitely one of those incidents that really is going to affect the police department for a long time, and the community will think about this for a long time,” said Sargent Ron Elcock with the Tempe Police Department.

A man who wanted to remain anonymous said he and his roommate heard a commotion outside their apartment and ran out to help.

The good samaritans found Howato soaked in blood and said when they asked her what happened she said she was stabbed. He asked her where, she said, “all over.”

Law enforcement used GPS to track the SUV and eventually used a spike strip to stop the car when the suspect refused to pull over.

Durazo, pictured below, is facing two counts of first-degree murder and one count each of kidnapping, car theft and armed robbery.

Investigators said the suspect’s original intention was to steal the vehicle.
