Saturday is Armed Forces Day- it’s a holiday to recognize those currently serving in the military.

The holiday is celebrated every year on the 3rd Saturday in May.

President Harry S. Truman helped make the holiday a reality in 1949, in hopes of creating a holiday to come together and thank military members for their service in support of our country.

On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson made it all official, by announcing Armed Forces Day- which replaced separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days.

The single day celebration all came about from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense.
