COLORADO SPRINGS — On Tuesday, February 11th, UCHealth will host a free Heart Healthy event at the UCHealth Memorial Administrative Center, in the Cucharra room from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. As part of February’s Heart Month, this event will give our community a chance to learn more about heart disease and the latest guidelines from the American Heart Association.
Dr. Samuel Hayes, MD, MBA, FACC - a cardiologist with UCHealth Memorial Hospital - will be speaking at the event. Dr. Hayes says that while Colorado remains one of the healthiest states statistically, there is no room for complacency when it comes to heart disease.
“I do think that Colorado is seeing a lot of the same influences that we are seeing nationwide. People are living a more sedentary life and not getting out exploring the mountains or whatever they enjoy doing. I think that dietary changes are also a big thing.”
Dr. Hayes says some of the topics he will be talking about are chest pain, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, diet and exercise, and heart disease prevention. “I think most importantly, we need to try to prevent heart disease, and that is where my talk will focus. As of this past September, there's the new guidelines from the American Heart Association of how we approach otherwise healthy people and prevent heart disease going forward.”
Dr. Hayes also will be talking about other new guidelines that he commonly gets questions about. “I'm going to try to include some common questions I get from patients day in and day out. One of the more common questions that has come up in the past year is: ‘What do we do about aspirin?’ I think there will be a few questions that are always on the top of people's minds.”
