CANON CITY — This year it doesn't matter if you are gathering for Christmas safely in person, virtually or even just over the phone. As our loved ones age It's important that we know their end of life care wishes, and if you don’t the holidays are actually as good a time as any.

Lisa Larsen, is a registered nurse, and serves as the Clinical Director, Vice President of Fremont Regional Hospice in Canon City who says the topic of hospice and end of life care doesn't have to be a macabre or morbid conversation even during the holidays.

“I wish it wasn't thought of as so doom and gloom because it actually is a very positive experience for most people when they enter into hospice and are dealing with mortality. It's a fact of life, and we get to celebrate that life. We don't focus on death when we have them as patients. We get symptoms, and then we tell family and friends to love them, help them and talk to them.”

Really, anytime of the year when you gather with family is a good time to make sure you know what your loved ones want for themselves when the time comes.

Lisa adds, “It's so important to think about hospice prior to (needing it) and to let your loved ones know what you want when you come to the end of your life. What is that going to look like for you? It is an individual journey we take with loved ones surrounding us, and we don’t want them to have to be guessing.”

Lisa also says if your kids don't ask, take the initiative yourself to make your wishes known. “Just have it written down somewhere and give it to a friend or whoever is close to you. It doesn't have to be an with an attorney, it can be a family member or a close friend. As long as you have it written down, the doctors and physicians can know what your wishes were and are.”

If you have any questions about the services provided at Fremont Regional Hospice, feel free to give them a call at 719-275-4315. Lisa says they love answering questions, and if their services are not what you need they are happy to get you in touch with the right people.
