COLORADO SPRINGS — Aches and pains are common as we age, especially in the knees. But how do you know when it’s time to get that knee looked at by a doctor, or whether it’s fine to simply ice it and give it some rest?
Dr. Matthew Javernick, an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist with UCHealth Memorial Hospital, says a conservative approach if a good place to start. “If it's just pain, I would definitely recommend starting with some stretching and finding some way to stimulate your knee. That can even be a stationary bicycle to stimulate that cartilage. If your seat’s too low that will make your knee pain worse, so make sure your seat is set properly whether it's on a stationary bike or a road bicycle.”
If conservative approaches aren't helping, Dr. Javernick says there are a few warning signs to look for that should be checked by a doctor. “If you start getting swelling in your knee, you need to get that looked at. That means something is structurally wrong with your knee joint. It may be simple arthritis or maybe a traumatic injury from overuse.” Dr. Javernick also says, “If your knee is starting to lock or catch, you should definitely come in and be seen.”
Beginning in late 2020, complete and comprehensive orthopedic care from diagnosis to surgery to physical therapy and rehab will all be happening on the campus of the UCHealth Grandview Hospital. On Wednesday, August 21st, 2019, there was a groundbreaking ceremony on a new a 65,000-square-foot medical office building that will house an orthopedic clinic, a primary care practice with a focus on sports medicine and bone health, advanced orthopedic imaging services and an expansive physical therapy clinic and gym.
Andrew Ritchie is the chief administrator for the UCHealth Grandview Hospital and says: “The ease of access to this facility is something that we think is important. It’s centrally located within the community and it has easy access from the north side of Colorado Springs, or the south end of Colorado Springs right off of I-25 and we will be able to offer all those services at a single location. We think that is really important.”
