COLORADO SPRINGS — In this Your Healthy Family we're letting you know, it's time to get your flu shot.
Dr. Ian Tullberg, MD is the medical director of urgent care for UCHealth in southern Colorado, who says the time to get your flu vaccination is now. “At five of our south clinics, we have had between five and ten positive flu tests already. It’s certainly not too early, it’s in your best interest and the interest of those around you. The earlier you get the flu shot the better honestly, there have been some studies showing that your antibodies to the flu can last up to a year.”
While some believe this could be a bad year for the flu, the Centers for Disease Control says it's very hard to predict what the virus will do year to year. While last year, the flu season was considered moderate in Colorado, it’s unpredictable nature is why getting a flu shot is always recommended.
Dr. Tullberg says if you are someone who feels like you don’t need a flu shot because you never get the flu, it’s not all about you. “Maybe don't do it for you, but do it to the people that you might be around. Even when you’re walking down the street you don't know who you're going to come in contact with. It may be a person undergoing some kind of cancer treatment, or that has HIV or something else that puts them at a huge high risk. Don't do it for yourself, do it for your community.”
If you have questions or concerns about the flu shot make sure to follow up with your doctor.
