Is leg pain keeping you up at night? We’re not talking about the growing pains that most kids deal with. If you're an older person and leg pain is something new for you, you should consider getting it looked at.

At the American Vein & Vascular Clinics in Colorado, the way they do business has changed after closing for a month because of COVID-19.

Dr. Gordon Gibbs, MD is the Chief Medical Executive and Chief Executive Officer of the American Vein & Vascular Institute in Colorado.

Dr. Gibbs says, “Everybody in our office wears a mask universally, not only to protect each other but to protect our patients. We are very conscientious of keeping a safe distance from each other, unfortunately, there are no more handshakes in the office. These are just steps we are taking to protect each other and our patients. We have installed a protective barrier between our check-in area and our patients. When we are ready for a patient's appointment we will call them and ask them to come in from their car. We do a lot more cleaning of the office generally, in our lobby and check-in area, as well as other spaces we might not normally sterilize multiple times a day are getting cleaned multiple times a day.”

The symptoms of venous disease that people should be aware of can be subtle, and generally will not resolve on their own.

Dr. Gibbs explains, “If you are living with symptoms of venous disease, some examples of symptoms might be cramping, swelling, aching, and varicose veins. You may be restless at night because of cramping and many of those things are very treatable for most people. Left untreated they can be quite debilitating and can impact your quality of life.”

If the majority of your leg pain problems are disrupting your sleep, they shouldn’t be ignored because of the larger impact they can have on your overall health and quality of life.

Dr. Gibbs says, “For folks with nighttime symptoms they definitely have an impact on their quality of sleep. If you wake up tired in the morning and in general don't feel good you're not going to have as good of a day. At that point its kind of a perpetual cycle that we see with our patients. As soon as we break that cycle, with treatment and allow them to get a good night's sleep, then all of a sudden they're able to resume normal activities during the day with exercise and with their quality of life.”

Moving forward in our pandemic world until there is a treatment or vaccine as long as medical offices are taking the proper precautions there is no need to continue to deal with painful conditions that can be treated and improved, especially leg pain.

Dr. Gibbs says, “We feel like we're providing an environment where people can get taken care of safely, even in the setting of a pandemic.”
