Dr. Mitchell, who has been in private practive as a gastroenterologist for 23 years, also says that taking a functional approach to gut-health can be key to preventing many diseases and a healthier lifestyle.

“I have been studying functional GI medicine for the last 2 years and now through GutWell Medical I try to dive into the root causes of patients, GI symptoms and disease using some of the newer and advanced testing available.”

Dr. Mitchell says that testing opens a window into what’s happening in someone's gut, and can provide answers of how to prevent many GI symptoms and related diseases.

“We're able to really look at the health of the gut through testing and what we call the microbiome. The microbiome is really looking at the thousands and trillions of species of microorganisms that live in our gut and keep us healthy every day.”

A traditional approach to GI health in the past has focused on dietary changes and/or the use of pharmaceuticals to treat symptoms. Dr. Mitchell says this is an area where a proactive functional approach can help people avoid the use of drugs.

“By understanding what's really going on in your microbiome we don't necessarily have to give prescriptions in order to heal patients. We can use lifestyle changes, and we know diet and exercise creates very favorable changes in the microbiome. Now there are even supplements, whether it’s vitamins or digestive enzymes, there is an array of super supplements that actually can very much heal your gut.”
