When youre a waterfall chaser, youre always on the lookout for a new spot. I knew there was an Angel of Shavano campground and a Shavano Peak, but when I heard there was a Shavano waterfall, too, I had to figure out where.

It turns out, its a really short hike. You can start at the campground or across the road at the Shavano trailhead, near Buena Vista and Salida.

From here, hike west on County Road 240. Its a rocky, dirt road that you can drive, but signs warn that it's a four-wheel drive road.

As you come around the first curve, youll hear the Arkansas River, but the waterfall is not here.

Cross the river, and continue hiking on the road uphill and around the bend. At the top of the bend, leave the road and hike toward the river. Its just a few steps until you see the falls.

You can enjoy the falls from the top or go exploring to get closer. There are lots of dirt and rock paths here. It can be very dangerous, especially if the rock is wet, so be careful.

As you get closer, youll notice there are multiple falls here. The main waterfall has three drops. Then, the river bends and there is one more cascade.

Angel of Shavano Falls is a great waterfall with just a short hike.

Note: Google Maps calls it North Fork Arkansas Falls.

Details: The hike from the trailhead is about 1/3 of a mile each way.

Directions: Google Angel of Shavano campground and park at the trailhead by the campground. Or from Highway 285, go west on Highway 50 for about 6.3 miles. Turn right on County Road 240. Its paved for three miles, then its gravel. Its about 3.7 miles from Highway 50 to the trailhead.

A new hockey team is coming to Pueblo!

The North American Hockey League (NAHL) announced that the Chippewa Steel will be relocating to the Steel City, playing games at the Pueblo Ice Arena, which is located near on North Grand Avenue.

The NAHL is forming a new mountain division that will feature five teams from Colorado, Montana, Utah and Idaho that have been moved up from the National Collegiate Development Conference (NCDC).

Other teams in the new division include the following:

The newly created Mountain Division is one of five divisions across the league, and the recently added teams will join a roster of 33 other teams across the nation.

The Chippewa Steel will be replacing the Pubelo Bulls, who competed as part of the NCDC.

Multiple tiers ahead of the NCDC, the NAHL is a Tier II junior hockey league sanctioned by USA Hockey. The league consistently ranks as the second strongest junior league in the United States.

News5's Dante Williams spoke with Chippewa Steel General Manager Vinny Bohn, and he says he and the Pueblo Bulls Head Coach Chris Wilhite were in direct communication about relocating to Pueblo.

Kind of happened organically between Chris and I," said Bohn. "I picked up the phone and instead of tracking hockey, it turned into a business call, which I think was the first time in our friendship. It was like 'hey, if this is a possibility, what do you guys think?'"

Bohn says the Steel and the Bulls organizations will now operate under one umbrella. He says both coaching staffs will be kept, and they'll all work together to produce the best product and help players move on to the next level.

We're in this together. Our goal is, I think everybody's goal, when it comes to the rink, is to win a championship and bring it to the City of Pueblo, said Bohn.

As for the players, everyone will have a chance to make the team. The Steel will host tryouts in Michigan from June 25 through the 28.

From there, we will bring the best players to Pueblo, and once the preseason and the season starts going, that's when we will make the determination of who makes the final cut, said Bohn.

The team is set to arrive in Pueblo in late August to start practicing. The season will begin in September.

The 104th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is right around the corner. Here's everything you need to know about this iconic automobile race that draws competitors from all around the world to test their driving prowess on America's Mountain.

Dubbed 'The Race to the Clouds,' this year's competition is situated on Sunday, June 21, and is slated to feature 75 drivers representing eight different countries.

Situated along the Pikes Peak Highway, gates for spectators to travel to their designated viewing areas open at 2:30 am, and the first race will kick off at 7:30 am.

Practice and qualifying runs will take place June 16 - 19; tickets and information for practice days and race day can be found here.

On the Friday (June 19) preceding the race, Downtown Colorado Springs will play host to Fan Fest, a celebration of the Hill Climb that will take over a portion of Tejon Street that stretches from Platte down to Vermijo and will run from 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm.

The free event will give visitors a chance to get a closer look at more than 60 of this year's drivers alongside their vehicles; the festival will also feature FMX Motocross demonstrations, plenty of vendors/displays, and a number of local breweries.

The Colorado Springs Western Street Breakfast is set to return to Downtown Colorado Springs on June 17, serving up breakfast to thousands in celebration of the start of rodeo season and the region's deeply rooted Western heritage.

Dating back to 1936 (when about 35 people attended), this event annually dishes out a breakfast of sausage, eggs, a beverage, and pancakes (of course) to an estimated 10,000 visitors on an annual basis.

The cooking and food distribution for the event is primarily handled by volunteers from Fort Carson as well as Peterson Space Force Base, with proceeds from the event going towards military families.

The event, hosted by the Pikes Peak Range Riders (PPRR), also acts as the traditional starting point for the organization's annual ride (since 1949). The Pikes Peak Range Riders and Rangerettes will ride through Downtown and out of town at 8:00 am, near the end of the Western Street Breakfast.

The event runs from 5:30 am to 9:00 am on Wednesday, June 17, and is centered at the intersection of Pikes Peak Avenue and Tejon Street; the cost for breakfast is only $5.00, and children 5 and under can eat a meal for free.

Additionally, the Breakfast will feature live music and dancing demonstrations as well as a number of activities focused towards families and kids.

Palmer Lake is getting a new addition, and the community is invited to help "awaken" it!

The Town of Palmer Lake announced "The Troll Unveiling" is taking place on June 28 at 2 p.m. there will be an unveiling of a troll statue under the pedestrian bridge with a few words from community leaders, a special moment with the artist behind the troll, and the official "troll awakening" and unveiling.

Following the unveiling, there will be a "sTroll" to Joe Mama's courtyard for games, treats music and troll-themed fun. The bar and event center is located at 75 Highway 105, which is located near Palmer Lake.

There will be cornhole, bubbles, connect four, troll cookies, lemonade, music, troll party favors, troll cocktails and more.

Awake Palmer Lake is behind the event and is a nonprofit dedicated to building community by raising funds and supporting projects that make Palmer Lake a more special place.

Bass Pro Shops is hosting free catch-and-release fishing days for kids and families this weekend at its Colorado Springs location.

The event runs Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the store's pond on the north side of Colorado Springs. Organizers say the event is designed to help kids and families create memories reeling in their first catch.

"It's really hard to go out in nature sometimes and figure out the fishing," said Chris Koeninger the GM of the Bass Pro Shops in Colorado Springs. " You can do that here at Bass Pro Shops. We already have them figured out and they're all about getting caught and making a memory for the first time catching a fish."

No registration is required, and all fishing gear and bait are provided. Fish stocked in the pond include bass, trout, catfish and perch.

"You can tell a lot of them have been fishing but haven't been successful," said Koeninger of people attending past events. "We allow the pond for fishing and they become successful right away. Kids are amazing. They love it. Lots of pictures taken and Bass Pro Shops. We love being a part of that."

Annual celebrations are set to take place not just across Southern Colorado, but across the Nation, as people prepare to celebrate the end of chattel slavery in the United States.

Despite the Emancipation Proclamation from President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, declaring all enslaved people in the Confederate States to be free. It would not be until June 19, 1865, that federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to ensure that all enslaved people were free.

Across the U.S., Juneteenth is a celebration of that freedom that began in Texas all those years ago.

In Southern Colorado, that celebration can be found each year at events across the state. Here are a few to check out.

4th Annual Juneteenth Celebration

Hosted by the African American Historical & Genealogical Society of Colorado Springs, this event will be on Friday, June 19, at the African American Museum in Colorado Springs at the Westside Community Center Campus from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

A freedom march will kick off the event at 12:00 p.m. and will be followed by museum tours, historical booths, vendors, and plenty of kids' activities from story hours to reenactment performances.

6th Annual Southern Colorado Juneteenth Festival

This two-day event will take place on Saturday and Sunday at The Norris Penrose Indoor Event Center. The Southern Colorado Juneteenth Festival is free to the public and wants to bring the community together for two days of live music, food, art, and family fun.

People can expect to see a car and motorcycle show on Saturday, which will include an electric vehicle showcase. With performances from artists David Banner, 702, and Lil G across the two days, there will be plenty of activities to partake in.

Each year, the Juneteenth Organization of Pueblo hosts its Annual Juneteenth Celebration at Ray Aguilera Park. The event has been on different dates in years past, but the group plans to hold the event on Saturday, June 20, and will start at 12:00 p.m.

This year, there will be a community dessert competition, and the group says that if you want to participate, an entry will cost you $10. Desserts must be ready to present by no later than 11:30 a.m.

Set for October of 2026, a beloved community event will continue according to Manitou Springs City Leaders.

City leaders were debating how to ensure safety for the massive crowds that will line Manitou Avenue in the fall. The annual event tends to bring in more than 10,000 people to the small historic town at the base of Pikes Peak.

There were concerns about the event's safety, but the City Council has agreed to bring in an additional 25 officers to patrol the races and ensure road closures are enforced, according to our news partners at The Gazette.

While the extra security will help manage crowds and ensure safety, the city and event organizers still need to find a solution for paying for it, which is set to cost roughly $10,000.

We are not in the dog days of summer yet, but Pueblo is getting a head start on them. Wednesday night was the Annual Community Dog Walk at the Arkansas Riverwalk.

Hundreds of dogs and their owners bared the heat to take a stroll around the iconic Pueblo landmark.

"We actually came to this event last year and it was awesome," said Gary Gomez, who lives in Pueblo. "This year, it's much bigger than it was, which is good to see, it just means that more people in the community are coming together, and it's just awesome to see people in Pueblo... participating."

Vendors were also there to show the resources and shops available for dogs and humans.

In what has been labeled as "dog week" in Pueblo, Wednesday night is the third annual Dog Days of Summer community dog walk.

Hundreds of owners and furry friends are expected to attend the free event happening at the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk.

Mayor Heather Graham and her dog Lucy will lead the walk at 7:15 p.m.

You can visit more than 20 local vendors for giveaways and treats.

Riverwalk restaurants will also offer special discounts.

Members of animal law enforcement and the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region will be on site to ensure the safety of animals and participants.

The event runs from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight, and all dogs must be on a leash. Owners, you are expected to have your own water and waste bags for your pets on hand.

The event put on by Visit Pueblo and the Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce seeks to highlight the dog-friendly attractions that Pueblo has to offer for residents and visitors alike.

A Colorado tradition is back yet again! It's time for all squires, knights, and fair maidens to descend upon Larkspur yet again for a summer of Renaissance fair activities.

The 49th Annual Colorado Renaissance Festival returns this weekend.

It's held every year in Larkspur, which is about 30 minutes north of Colorado Springs.

The festival is for all ages and includes armored jousts, knighting ceremonies, 10 stages with music, juggling, acrobatics, and comedy.

The fair is open Saturdays and Sundays, starting on June 13th.

It opens at 10 am and closes at 6:30 pm. Tickets for adults are 32 dollars, and tickets for children ages 5 to 12 are 15 dollars.

Children under four get in for free.

Just remember, driving and parking for the event can take a while, so be prepared.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife invited resident and nonresident anglers of all ages to participate in Free Fishing Weekend, waiving all fishing license and habitat stamp requirements.

The state offers more than 35 warm and cold-water species across 6,000 miles of streams and more than 1,300 lakes and reservoirs.

Anglers still had to follow any posted signs about water closures and all standard fishing regulations during the free weekend.

On Sunday, many people were out enjoying the warm weather, lining the banks of Quail Lake, hoping to catch some fish.

The 23rd Annual Manitou Springs, Colorado Wine Festival is happening Saturday, and the incline will be closed.

"Get Outdoors Day is just a chance to show everyone all the amazing opportunities that we have here in Colorado. There's so much variety, so many different things to do that tomorrow is a great chance to try that, see what you like," said Sauder.

Attendees can try fishing, water activities, map reading, and archery, among other activities.

The first 650 kids to arrive will receive free fishing poles starting at 9 a.m.

"We've got 650 free fishing poles for the first kids that show up starting at 9 a.m. We'll start handing those out so that kids can try fishing for free. They don't need to bring any of the equipment. We provide everything for them," said Sauder.

Dozens of vendors will also be on hand. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Getting out and exploring the Pikes Peak region doesn't need to break the bank.

We're highlighting businesses, organizations, and happenings that you can engage with for under $40; the focus for this article (and outing) is the Backyard Market in Black Forest.

Situated at 6845 Shoup Road in Black Forest and operating each Saturday from late May through mid-October, this market is dedicated to supporting local producers and creators.

"So we really are supporting the most local of our small businesses here in the market," commented Theda Stone, founder and manager of the market, "which is super important, especially in this economy, especially with when you're building community. You want to know where your food comes from. You want to meet the people that make it. And this is the perfect place to do that on Saturday morning."

Theda expects that each market this year will boast more than 80 vendors; the market runs from 9:00 - 1:00 pm on Saturdays.

"This is where you can come out on Saturday mornings," added Stone, "you can talk to your farmers, talk to your favorite food producers and vendors, and basically just build that relationship with them, with your friends, listen to live music, do a kid's corner activity. We've got it all out here in Black Forest."

The market also operates The Farm Shop inside the log church on the same property; the shop is open every day and runs year-round.

Whether you're convinced Bigfoot is hiding in the mountains, fascinated by UFO sightings or simply enjoy a good ghost story, Cripple Creek is preparing to become Colorado's paranormal capital for a day.

The Cripple Creek Paracon is set for June 6 at the Chamonix Casino Hotel, bringing together paranormal investigators, authors, speakers, vendors and enthusiasts from across the country for a full day dedicated to the unexplained. Organizers describe the event as a gathering for anyone interested in paranormal research, ufology and cryptozoology, the study of legendary creatures such as Bigfoot and other mysterious animals.

Guests can attend presentations, panel discussions, workshops and vendor exhibits while exploring topics that range from haunted locations to unidentified aerial phenomena. Among the featured guests are several well-known names in the paranormal television world, including Amy Bruni and Adam Berry, who are known for their work investigating reportedly haunted locations. Additional speakers and investigators are scheduled throughout the day. The event is expected to draw both seasoned paranormal investigators and curious newcomers looking to learn more about ghost-hunting equipment, supernatural folklore and unexplained phenomena.

Attendees will also have opportunities to browse vendor booths and participate in activities such as tarot and medium readings. Paranormal conventions, often called "Paracons," have grown in popularity nationwide in recent years, attracting fans of ghost-hunting television shows, cryptid research and UFO investigations. Events frequently blend entertainment, storytelling and educational presentations while giving attendees a chance to meet personalities from the paranormal community.

For Cripple Creek, a town already known for its colorful mining history and reputation for haunted buildings, the convention provides a fitting backdrop for conversations about things that go bump in the night. Whether attendees arrive as believers, skeptics or somewhere in between, organizers say the goal is simple: explore the mysteries that continue to capture the public's imagination.

"The reason we chose Cripple Creek is actually very personal to our team," one of the event's organizers Ricky Gilpatric wrote to News5. "Two members of our paranormal team took a family vacation to Colorado and investigated the Outlaws & Lawmen Jail Museum in Cripple Creek. On the second-to-last day of their trip, a local woman and her father approached them and said they 'appreciated them' because they had watched them all week shopping and eating locally. That moment really stuck with them, and thats when they knew they wanted to find a way to give back to the Cripple Creek community."

Ahead of the conference, News5 spoke to a self-proclaimed Bigfoot expert who claims to have discovered the body of a sasquatch in New York's Adirondack Mountains.

Charles "Snake" Stuart, who has spent more than a decade searching for Bigfoot, said he stumbled upon what he believes was a juvenile specimen in 2024.

"The main reason I found the body was I could smell it," said Stuart. "These things are naturally stinky, but this was really stinky, really putrid. I like to say it was stink on top of stink."

Stuart said he found the body in marshy terrain west of Old Forge, New York, after focusing his searches near water sources during the fall, a season he said is associated with increased Bigfoot sightings in the region.

According to Stuart, DNA samples submitted to a veterinary laboratory showed what he described as Neanderthal DNA. He said the results were later reviewed by a Japanese documentary team and scientists associated with the project.

The claims have not been independently verified by mainstream scientific organizations.

The Bigfoot enthusiast said Colorado remains one of the country's most active regions for sightings.

"You guys have a lot of Bigfoot there," said Stuart of Colorado. "From what we've gathered from talking to so many people over the past 12 years, they vary in size and build and hair coloring."

When asked what advice he would give aspiring Bigfoot hunters, Stuart discouraged making loud noises in the woods.

"Bigfoots are naturally elusive," he added. "Banging on logs or making noise and causing trouble, it's not going to work for you."

Instead, Stuart recommends researching reported sightings, paying attention to seasonal patterns and looking for environmental clues.

"You have to think about it just like a human being," he said. "What are the natural resources that you would need?"

Stuart said his mission now is to convince more people that Bigfoot is real.

"We're in the age of acceptance and understanding, and Bigfoot is right there, right alongside the UFOs," he said. "This is all breaking through."

Territory Days is celebrating a milestone this Memorial Day weekend in Old Colorado City 50 years of honoring the moment Colorado established its 1st Territorial Capital.

Ralph Bower of the Colorado Cowboys said the festival's roots trace back to a historic celebration held in the same neighborhood.

"In 1876, they applied for statehood, and they threw a major party right here in Old Colorado City. Meadow Muffins used to be the dance hall," said Bower.

The timing of this year's event makes it especially significant.

"50th year of Territory Days, 150th of the state of Colorado, 250th of our nation. So that's a pretty impressive feat that people have carried that tradition for 50 years," said Bower.

Michael Abbott said he has attended the event almost every year since it began and has watched it grow considerably.

"It has grown from like two streets to what it is now. I don't even know how many streets anymore!" said Abbott.

For Vickie Corder, who owns Grammy's Goodies and is known for her Territory Days booth's iconic turkey legs, the festival has stayed true to what made it special from the start. She said there hasn't been much change over the two decades she has been at the festivities.

"Not much at all. That's why I love this one. It still holds true to its roots. It's just family, community-oriented, and we love being here," said Corder.

Despite the growth and changes over five, 20, and 50 years, attendees say they keep coming back to honor the history and the community the festival represents.

"We just all need togetherness. It's just wonderful to come out and enjoy the sunshine and enjoy Colorado," said Corder.

Territory Days runs throughout Memorial Day weekend in Old Colorado City. Saturday and Sunday, it is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. On Monday, it is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Originally dubbed "Decoration Days", the origins of Memorial Day date back to a post-Civil War Union when the first practices were recognized in 1868 to decorate the graves of Civil War soldiers according to the National Cemetery Administration.

Officially becoming a Federal Holiday in 1971, Memorial Day honors veterans from across US history who died for the country.

On Thursday, the 4th Infantry Division with Fort Carson held one of its first Memorial Day ceremonies honoring those soldiers from our region who have given the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

With our extensive military population and connection in Southern Colorado, there are many ceremonies and ways to honor them. Here is a look at a few.

Pikes Peak National Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony

At Pikes Peak National Cemetery on the southeast side of Colorado Springs, the Memorial Day ceremony starts at 10 am. On their Facebook page, they say to consider carpooling because parking is limited. Anyone who would like to volunteer on Saturday to lay flags on veterans' graves ahead of the ceremony on Monday can register here.

Pueblo Roselawn Cemetery Memorial Day Mass

Held for years at Roselawn Cemetery, a Memorial Day Mass is scheduled to be held at 10:00 at Roselawn Cemetery at Bishop's Mausoleum.

Pueblo Riverwalk Memorial Day Ceremony

Also in Pueblo, the Pueblo Veterans Council Memorial Day ceremony will be at 11 a.m. under the Veterans Bridge on the Pueblo Riverwalk. It will include a flyover by Doss Aviation.

Monument Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony

The Town of Monument will host a Memorial Day Ceremony honoring those veterans whose final resting place is the Monument Cemetery. The ceremony is set to start at 10:00 a.m. and is free and open to the public.

Evergreen Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony

A ceremony will also get underway at 10 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery off Hancock Expressway in Colorado Springs. The event includes living history displays and a Buffalo Soldiers presentation.

This Memorial Day, the 8th Annual Angel Run hosted by Red Leg Brewing will take place.

This 10k and 5k run/walk is a great way to kick off the holiday, get outside, and help military families in our community. Each year, all proceeds from the event are donated to Angels of America's Fallen.

A nonprofit with the mission of funding positive and healthy activities for children of fallen military, firefighters, and law enforcement. The group also offers grief counseling and scholarships, among other things, to the families.

The run will take place starting at Red Leg Brewing along Garden of the Gods Road at 8:00 a.m. Runners will follow the bike path from 30th Street down to the Garden of the Gods visitor center before being turned around to make their way back to Red Leg Brewing.

Each year, hundreds of people have shown up, and News5 has been a proud media sponsor of the event. Check out the scenes from a previous year in the video player below.

Race registration will last through Sunday, May 23, and will start at $54.00. Racers can pick up their packets from Red Leg Brewing on Thursday from 12:00 - 4:00 p.m. or on Race Day, but plan to get there early, as a line can develop.

This Memorial Day Weekend kicks off the unofficial start of Summer across the United States.

In Colorado Springs, it signals summertime at parks across the city and an opportunity for the kids to "splish and splash" at the pools, splash pads, and fountains across Colorado Springs.

There will be changes this year, as the City of Colorado Springs remains in a budget deficit, fountains like the Julie Penrose Fountain at America the Beautiful Park will not operate during the 2026 summer season. "

Despite budget conditions shutting down fountains and some facilities at parks across Colorado Springs, there will still be options available for families to get out, make some memories, and enjoy the sun.

Facilities that will be open and operating this Summer are below.

The Splash Pad at Panorama Park

Located at one of Colorado Springs newest parks on the Southeast side of the city, this splash ground will be opening Saturday, May 23, and will operate daily from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Deerfield Hills Spray Grounds

Located at the Deerfield Hills Community Center, this splash pad has more than 50 nozzles for children to play in and 16 water features. The grounds will be opening on June 1 and will operate from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily.

The Watering Hole at John Venezia Community Park

Located on the northeast side of Colorado Springs at John Venezia Community Park, families can find The Watering Hole. This park features more than a dozen water features. Opening on Saturday, May 23, this facility will operate 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. daily.

Uncle Wilber Fountain at Acacia Park

In the heart of downtown Colorado Springs, families can swing by Acacia Park to stop by the Uncle Wilber Fountain. Created in 2000, the interactive fountain was created by artists Bob and Kat Tudor, according to the Pikes Peak Library District. The fountain will operate from 12;00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. daily during the summer season.

Note that all fountains and splash pads in the City of Colorado Springs are free.

The Monument Valley Pool

Located in lower Monument Valley Park, the Monument Valley Pool will open its doors for the summer on Saturday, May 23. It should be noted that access will be interesting as the City of Colorado Springs is currently updating the Cache La Poudre bridge across Fountain Creek, so plan ahead.

Wilson Ranch Pool

Located on the northwest side of Colorado Springs, off Centennial Boulevard. The Wilson Ranch Pool will also open on Saturday, May 23.

The 303 Open disc golf tournament wrapped up this weekend at the City Park Disc Golf Course in Pueblo, marking the first time the event has been held in the city.

Kyle Maute, event organizer for the 303 Open and tour director for the National Amateur Disc Golf Tour, said the tournament is one of Colorado's largest disc golf events and has been held annually since 2011.

"The goal of the event was to bring Colorado together as a disc golf community," Maute said.

The tournament featured multiple divisions, including Mixed Amateur 1, the highest level of amateur play, along with age-protected pro divisions, a female pro open, and a mixed pro open.

Joel Freeman, a touring pro from Colorado, won the mixed pro open after going to a playoff against Kyle Krieckhaus.

"Been really close to winning it several times and so to finally come out with the win today feels fantastic," Freeman said.

Freeman said he stayed focused during the playoff round rather than looking ahead to the finish.

"I was trying to just not get ahead of myself, just trying to tell myself like, hey, there's more to play. The job's not done," Freeman said.

Santos Montoya of Colorado Springs finished 12th in the open division. He said the competition was fierce but the atmosphere among players remained positive throughout the tournament.

"47 players in the open division, only one winner, and I mean there's a battle going on with each individual player. We really just had a good vibe smiling, high fiving." Montoya said.

Freeman echoed that sentiment, highlighting the culture of the sport as one of its defining qualities.

"Very distinct within disc golf is the sportsmanship. Everybody roots for each other all the way to the best players in the world, to the local players," Freeman said.

Organizers chose Pueblo's City Park course in part because of its age and history. Maute described it as one of the oldest courses in Colorado, if not the oldest, and one that has held up through decades of changes to the sport.

"Something in Colorado that we don't have a lot of is grass and trees and shade and lush, beautiful city parks, and Pueblo is all of that," Maute said.

Pueblo Parks and Recreation worked with organizers ahead of the tournament to upgrade the course. During a pre-tournament visit, Maute found that some equipment had deteriorated or been vandalized, including baskets with broken welds and missing chains that did not meet Professional Disc Golf Association tier specifications.

"I contacted the Parks and Rec. We had a great meeting out here, and they went to work trying to figure out how they could come up with a way to start polishing the gem of City Park that they have right here in their backyard," Maute said.

Within 4 months, the city installed new baskets, added new tee signs, and built out multiple pin placements and 2 tee pads on nearly every hole.

Maute also credited Visit Pueblo and the local disc golf club, the Steel City Shooters, for helping make the event a success.

Looking ahead, a National Amateur Disc Golf Tour qualifier is planned at City Park in August. Maute said conversations with Pueblo Parks and Recreation and Visit Pueblo point toward the 303 Open returning to Pueblo in 2027.

"Parks and Rec went out of their way to make this event happen as smoothly as it could. The players noticed it. The staff noticed it, and so did the spectators," Maute said. "I can't see a reason that we wouldn't be coming back down here, and I'm super excited to do it."

The third annual Garden of the Gods Art Festival is underway at Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site in Colorado Springs this weekend.

Attendees can browse work from 150 artists and craftsmen from across the country. The work includes pottery, jewelry, paintings, glass art, woodwork, and more. The event also features live music against the backdrop of Pikes Peak.

Artists can sell their work and network with attendees.

Kyle Gowen of Colorado Fire Pits said the event has already been a success.

"So far for me, I've gotten orders, so it's great. It is a good show whenever I leave with orders, but it's not always about what I send home with somebody right now. It's about finding out exactly what somebody wants."

Jessica Mahan, an Arvada, Colorado-based oil painter attending the festival for the first time, said the event gives artists a valuable platform.

"I think it's a great place to get exposure for your work. For me, this is the work I've been creating for the past 6 months. I've been spending a long time in the studio, so to kind of go from being in a studio space working and then be able to come out and show all the work that I've been working hard on over the past 6 months, to get exposure with that and have a place to do it is amazing. It's a great opportunity."

Families can also enjoy activities for kids and grab a bite from local food trucks.

The first 125 moms to show up outside of Good Intentions on Tejon Street received a free reusable tumbler to kick off the hunt.

Participants then made their way around Downtown, visiting shops and boutiques to find and collect stickers while taking advantage of one-day discounts.

Shoppers who gathered at least five stickers from participating shops, plus one from event sponsor Underline, earned a free lemonade from Pikes Peak Lemonade, which went into the tumblers given out at the start of the event.

People in Pueblo are showing its never too late to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. El Movimiento Sigue hosted its annual Cinco de Mayo event at Plaza Verde Park this year.

The event was postponed from Tuesday because of the weather.

Hundreds of people went to the park to celebrate Hispanic culture, receive free food and check out different community resources.

"We always have... something that is going on in the Chicano community, so the whole event is based around that and trying to offer people to learn a little bit more about their heritage or culture," said Tomas Martinez-Ortega, co-coordinator of the event.

Getting out and exploring Colorado Springs and the surrounding area doesn't need to break the bank.

We're highlighting businesses, organizations, and happenings that you can engage with for under $40; the focus for this article (and outing) is Phelan Gardens.

Opening its doors in 1981, this garden-based business features anything and everything necessary to kick-start your green thumb.

"So Phelan Gardens is a greenhouse, [and] a nursery," commented MJ Jones, the happenings coordinator for the business, "we sell houseplants, we sell edible plants, we've got perennials, shrubs, flowers; you name it, we probably have it if it will grow here in Colorado Springs."

Additionally, the plant-centric organization also organizes and regularly hosts a wide variety of educational courses and workshops that help to set gardeners up for success.

"We want to hit all of the aspects for well-rounded gardening and horticulture care," stated Jones.

Because there are several types of classes, there are also several price points for participation; however, beginning and informational classes are typically priced at $18.00 - $20.00, and programming directed towards children is often priced lower than that.

"We really want folks to come in," added Jones, "just learn with us and build some skills that they feel confident they can take a plant out the door and it's going to thrive with them at a very reasonable price point."

Follow the scent of fresh soil and blooming roses, and youll find yourself in the heart of one of Colorado Springs most beloved garden traditions.

For more than 60 years, the Horticultural Art Society of Colorado Springs has been cultivating not just plants, but a community.

While maintaining multiple public gardens, the society transforms Monument Valley Park into a place where native plants thrive, pollinators gather and the Pikes Peak community takes root.

Our mission is to cultivate beautiful gardens with mostly native plants, HAS trustee Gaye Woullard said. We like to showcase plants that do well in Colorado Springs with our demonstration gardens. We want to connect, enrich, educate and inspire people in this region.

For two weekends a year, those gardens grow into something much bigger: a cant-miss plant sale where seasoned gardeners and curious beginners alike come ready to dig in.

Here are three things to expect at the Gigantic Plant Sale, May 8-9 and May 15-16 at 222 Mesa Road.

Behind every blooming bed and carefully labeled plant is the work of the HAS nonprofit, powered entirely by local volunteers who simply love to grow.

At the sale, members of the society will help run the event and offer plant-shopping advice to locals.

For those looking to become a green thumb themselves and join HAS, memberships start at $25 for individuals, $40 for families, $60 for patrons and $500 for a lifetime membership, providing access to gardening classes, workshops and a network of fellow plant enthusiasts.

Along with guidance from members at the sale, master gardeners trained through El Paso Countys Colorado State University Extension are also part of the mix, available to answer any plant-related questions.

Whether its figuring out what thrives in Colorados climate or how to revive a struggling plant, theres no shortage of expertise on hand before locals make their final plant-purchasing decisions.

The sale brings together a mix of local and regional vendors, offering everything from native perennials to vegetables, herbs, grasses and flowering vines suited for the Pikes Peak region.

Vendors will include Desert Canyon Farm, High Country Roses and Bluebird Nursery, which will deliver plants from Nebraska to be a part of this years lineup, among others.

What makes the sale different from Lowes and places like that is that we get a lot of plants that nobody else gets, Woullard said. We have people standing in line all the way down the sidewalk before our doors even open.

Beyond vendor-grown plants, one of the most popular stops is the sales Dug & Donated section, a more personal corner of the event filled with plant goods straight from the community.

We have people, volunteers and members bring in plants they dug out of their own yard or divided from their own gardens to donate to us, she said. We price them and sell them, and sometimes people donate gardening equipment theyre not using.

Before you grab a wagon and start loading up on plants, there are a few things to know before you go.

The sale is free to attend, making it easy for anyone to stop by; its simply a pay-per-plant kind of deal.

For bargain hunters, the Dug & Donated section offers some of the best deals, with many plants and garden items priced around $5, Woullard said.

When it comes time to check out, shoppers have plenty of options. The sale accepts cash, checks, credit cards and wireless payment methods.

Visitors should also plan for parking. Ongoing construction near Monument Valley Park will close the bridge crossing Monument Creek, meaning access to the gardens will primarily be from Uintah Street via Glen Avenue.

Most of the event takes place outdoors, so its best to come prepared: think sunscreen, comfortable shoes and a reusable bag or two.

Otherwise, between the rows of plants, buzzing pollinators and fellow gardeners, prepare to spend your day digging into Colorado Springs growing season.

Based in the Pikes Peak Region, Theatre Across Borders has been putting together productions for children and families for several years. Their current production is an interactive play on the adventures of Winnie the Pooh. Even though a recent snowstorm hit parts of Colorado, it's always good weather for ice cream! A remodeled Baskin-Robbins will celebrate its grand reopening Saturday in Colorado Springs with discounted ice cream, giveaways and a charitable donation to a local nonprofit.

The Colorado Springs shop, located on Stetson Hills Boulevard, just east of Powers Boulevard, will host a reopening event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 9 featuring 31-cent ice cream scoops, music, branded merchandise giveaways and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The store reopened on April 17 after temporarily closing in 2025 for a full remodel following its acquisition by franchise group Allied Enterprises, LLC, owned by local residents Catherine and Danisch Rana.

During the event, the franchise group and the Baskin-Robbins Joy in Childhood Foundation will present a $10,000 grant to First Descents, a nonprofit that provides outdoor programs for young adults affected by cancer and other serious health conditions.

The remodeled, 1,800-square-foot shop seats 30 guests, employs 10 crew members and is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Some restaurants in southern Colorado are busy Tuesday for Cinco de Mayo as people celebrate Mexican heritage.

It's a holiday that celebrates Mexico's win over France in the Battle of Puebla in 1862.

News5 stopped by Tacos Fuego in Pueblo as they were in the thick of the Cinco de Mayo meal rush.

"...We definitely have a lot of people who come through here just having their drinks, tacos, enjoying the work we put in to make the place what it is," said Diego Terrones with Tacos Fuego.

The workers at Tacos Fuego say because Cinco de Mayo is one of the restaurant's busiest days of the year, they bring in extra staff to manage the rush.

Colorado Springs is gearing up for a blockbuster Independence Day celebration this year as the Star-Spangled Symphony returns to Ford Amphitheater for what organizers describe as a bigger and bolder Fourth of July show.

Tickets go on sale this week! Organizers say last years inaugural event sold out, and this years celebration carries added significance as the nation marks its 250th birthday and Colorado celebrates its 150th anniversary.

The event is set for Saturday, July 4, at Ford Amphitheater. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., with performances beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The night will build to classic patriotic staples, including the 1812 Overture and The Stars and Stripes Forever, before fireworks light up the sky around 9 p.m.

Poor Richard's, a fixture of downtown Colorado Springs since 1975, marked the end of an era Sunday as founders Richard Skorman and Patricia Seator introduced the business's new owners to the community at a Block Party on North Tejon Street.

The celebration, held from 2 to 6 p.m., featured food, free music, speakers, and family activities.

Skorman and Seator passed ownership of the business to Joe Cole and Sarah Gibeau-Cole after 51 years at the helm.

Poor Richard's has operated as a combination bookstore, restaurant, toy store, and community gathering place for more than five decades, becoming a cultural landmark well recognized in southern Colorado.

Skorman and Seator agreed to sell to Cole and Gibeau-Cole, choosing to step away from the business and into the next chapter of their lives. Skorman and Seator said finding the right people was central to their decision.

Cole said the block party was about more than just a celebration.

Reflecting on more than five decades in business, Skorman said the community's support made it all worthwhile.

The North Slope Recreation Area on Pikes Peak is open to the public again after a two-year closure. The area provides access to both the North and South Catamount Reservoirs and is available for fishing, non-motorized boating, and hiking.

"I feel like it's one of the best kept secrets in this whole kind of Colorado Springs, El Paso, Teller County region, said Skyler Rorabaugh, the Manager of Pikes Peak.

The area was closed for two years while Colorado Springs Utilities worked to improve and rehabilitate the South Catamount Reservoir. During construction, the reservoir was drained and all trails and access roads surrounding it were closed.

"The North and South Catamount area has been void or mostly void of people for the past two years and I know people are itching to get in and there's some fish that are itching to be caught."

A variety of outdoor enthusiasts are expected to return to the area.

"I know we've heard from paddle boarders and belly boat users and just a variety of different folks that are excited to get back out there and kayak around that facility or maybe even take a canoe out there, said Rorabaugh.

Trail maintenance was also completed during the closure period.

"They've been doing a lot of trail maintenance work back there on that trail system, so we know that the bikers are excited to get back there, said Rorabaugh.

Unlike the drive to the summit of Pikes Peak, no reservation is required to visit the North Slope Recreation Area. Admission is $5 per adult and free for children under 16. Parking costs an additional $1.

The North Slope Recreation Area is currently open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Those hours will extend on May 23 when summer hours begin, 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Space Foundation Discovery Center held its second annual National Space Day community event Saturday, offering families free access to hands-on STEM activities and a chance to meet two former NASA astronauts, Duane "Digger" Carey and Tim Kopra.

More than 30 community partners teamed up to put on the event. Attendance grew from more than 3,000 last year to over 4,000 this year.

Families explored the Discovery Center and took part in a range of interactive activities, including 3D printing pens, Mars Robotics Lab, Sphero Robotics and more.

The excitement was shared by younger visitors as well.

Attendees also got a look at the next-generation spacesuit from Axiom Space, which will be worn by astronauts when the Artemis program returns humans to the moon.

Organizers plan to bring the event back next year.
