Ashley Portillo

Multimedia Journalist

Ashley Portillo is a multimedia journalist during the weekdays at KOAA News5. In her role, she tells stories of our communities and people doing great things to keep them a wonderful place to live. She's grateful to call Colorado her new home away from home.

Born in Baltimore and raised in Pennsylvania, she reported for three years with our station, KRIS, in Corpus Christi, Texas. Ashley has covered everything from education, to crime, to local news and city government. Some of her most memorable moments come from reporting during severe weather in the Coastal Bend. She covered the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, a category four hurricane in 2017, and also covered Hurricane Hanna, a category one hurricane in July 2020.

Ashley knew at a young age she wanted to be a journalist. Writing and visual storytelling was always her outlet in being creative. She attended college at Temple University in Philadelphia, where she got her Bachelor's Degree in journalism.

Ashley enjoys engaging with people in their community and listening to what they have to say, whether it be pressing issues that need to be addressed or students and neighbors making a difference. Most importantly, journalism for her means being a voice for the voiceless and educating the community about what's going on.

When she's not finding the next story to tell, Ashley is figuring out what trail she wants to hike next. She enjoys being outdoors, going on long runs, exploring new places, and trying out new restaurants to eat at. If you have any recommendations on things to do, places to go, or food to eat, don't hesitate to reach out to her!
