Pieces of meat are washing up along the New Jersey and Delaware shorelines and officials are trying to determine exactly what the meat is.
The chunks are from some sort of massive marine creature. Bob Schoelkopf of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center said, "The largest piece that we found intact was 5 feet." Investigators think the meat is from internal organs, possibly from a whale or shark.
What's got them stumped is how the creature ended up in pieces. Schoelkopf said, "We've had some strange things come up, but this is a baffling one." Adding to the intrigue: old knife marks discovered on the flesh, suggesting that someone else likely found this stuff first.
Pieces of the mystery meat are now on ice and will be used for genetic testing. It could be months before those results are known.
