When is Hospice the right call?

News Articles

Posted 8:20 AM 3/19/2013 : When is hospice the right choice?

When an elderly parent or loved one is dying and death is near, it's hard to figure out what to do next.

Health experts say families shouldn't wait too long to consider hospice. If a patient is diagnosed as terminal with 6 months or less to live- they'll qualify for hospice.

The home visits allow a patient to live out the rest of their life comfortably. Research also shows it can extend a persons life expectancy-- even help get them well enough to leave the home health program.

"Research has shown that people with certain diagnoses, especially congestive heart failure, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer can extend their life on hospice with the mean being 29 days," says Karla Cordova with Frontier Hospice and Home Health.

She says studies also show hospice can be beneficial to family members during their grieving.

You do not need insurance to qualify for hospice.
