Posted 3:50 PM 12/25/2012 : Free meal enjoyed by hundreds at Union Depot

Not everyone can cook a nice home Christmas dinner, so there was a chance in Pueblo to enjoy one!

For 30 years the Wayside Cross Gospel Rescue Mission has prepared a turkey dinner, and hundreds came out to eat up the goodness at Union Depot today.

The volunteers say it's a great way to spend their Christmas.

Some of those enjoying the meal say this was the only way for their family to have a Christmas dinner.

A few volunteers told us why they wanted to help out.

"I had three bypasses and two stints put in my heart on May 2, so I have a lot to be thankful for," said Jodi Aguilera, a volunteer.

"We like to see people smile like we do over there," said Robert Arellano, a usual soup kitchen volunteer who was enjoying the meal today. "There's always great places to eat out there, there's always people, we'll contribute to you."

"I think there's just so many people who would either be alone or just do without, and to have a place for them to come and be part of the community, meet friends, and so forth, I think that just adds a lot to anybody's repertoire for a holiday," said Greg Coolidge, Director of Wayside Cross Gospel Rescue Mission.

Free cab rides were also given so people could make it to the dinner.

Hundreds turned out for a free Thanksgiving Day meal at the Union Depot in Pueblo. The doors opened at 11 a.m. and within the first hour and half, organizers estimate they served 600 people.

The meal included all the traditional favorites: turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, dinner rolls and pumpkin pie.

About 150 people donated to help serve food and beverages or greet guests.

The event was organized by the Pueblo Wayside Gospel Rescue Mission.
